"Red to Blue: Congressman Chris Van Hollen and Grassroots Politics"
Thursday, November 5, 7:30 pm

Chris Van Hollen, flanked by a grassroots army, won upset victories in the 2002 primary and general elections--even though one of his opponents had a consultant named David Axelrod. Van Hollen's win in the suburbs helped lift the Democrats out of the doldrums, the first step in a struggle that led to Barack Obama's triumph in 2008. Red to Blue chronicles Van Hollen's campaign from the inside, follows him as he becomes a rising star in his party, and visits the activists who changed history from Montgomery County, Maryland, to Carroll County, Iowa. "The book is valuable enough as a tale of Van Hollen," says Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute, "but its insights into the larger issues of American politics make it a real keeper." The book's foreword is written by Mike McCurry, former White House press secretary
Sanford Gottlieb worked in the peace movement from 1960 to 1993. He was executive director of SANE. The author of Defense Addiction, in 2002 he served as a Kensington precinct coordinator in Van Hollen's campaign.

"Mapping Your Volunteer Vacation"
Wednesday, November 11 7:00 pm

A volunteer vacation gives you a chance to experience new adventures
in places you have never been with people you have never met while
having the time of your life and making a difference.
What is not to love?
This is the book I needed before I left on my volunteer vacation.
When I planned my volunteer vacation, I could not find a resource that would help
me get organized. That’s why I created this workbook. It will lead you step by step
through issues to consider as you map out your domestic or international trip.
You will learn how to:
* Find the volunteer agency that is right for you.
* Record expenses for possible tax deductions.
* Locate airfares with agencies that know international flights.
* Organize your vaccination schedule.
* Pack lightly and efficiently.
* Track your purchases for ease at U.S. customs.
* Create your “to-do” list for when you return.
The book recently was named a Finalist in the National Indie Excellence Awards and won four 2009
Colorado EVVY Awards. The Midwest Book Review calls it “a must for the benevolent adventurer.”

NEXT IN LINE WORKSHOPS (Guide for Writing Your Autobiography)
|
First Three Tuesdays Nights in November
Beginning the 3rd, followed by the 10th and 17th
7:30pm
Armiger Jagoe, author of You Are Next in Line, Everyone's Guide for
Writing Your Autobiography, will conduct a three week workshop beginning at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, November 3. As attendence will be limited to thirty participants, please sign in advance at the Bookshop. Workshop is free with purchase of book ($12.00).
Now in You Are Next in Line, Jagoe offers the twelve
components of a successful autobiography, selecting
examples from fifty-six famed autobiographies, ranging
from Margery Kempe to Katharine Graham; and explains
not only how to record your life story but also reasons why
you should, such as the following:
- By writing your autobiography, you are acknowledging
that you are uniqueone of a kind.
- In studying a rerun of your life, you'll discover forgotten
facts about yourself.
- You'll feel rejuvenated as you rethink both joyful and
tragic events, and invariably you will find something new.
The unique and successful Next in Line concept of recording one's life story has been praised by many libraries, including the British Library in London.

RICHARD MARTIN A MEMORIAL TRIBUTE
|
|---|
A gentle person of sensitive spirit
You gave yourself to our town
Enriching the culture of learning, growing,
From the Tea Room to the book store
Helping in any way you could.
Volunteering at the Day of the Book;
Monitoring crowds and activities on Labor Day
Always taking time to listen
From your heart and soul.
Laughing and telling jokes,
Chipping away stone on stone
Creating simple art from rock.
Living every moment to its fullest
Loving life as you found it.
Genuine, honest and thoughtful of creation
The treasure of nature spoke
Inspired, you smiled and the world was brighter.
We were all blessed by your spirit.

HILARY THAM A MEMORIAL TRIBUTE
|
|---|
Sonnet written by Mel Belin on the occasion of the December 7th poetry reading in memory of Hilary Tham...
For Hilary Tham
--who was always there for us.
No seance for us, only this reading!
Enough come on a night in December -
your friends - six months after, still needing . . .
Celebrate your last book's launch, to remember.
Maybe what's done can't be un-. Still, it's as if
an energy to and from who's at the mic,
with feelings unexpected as ever riff
or revenant sensed: they play through us, take
off . . . From outside, a train shakes the bookstore
window, accelerates along the icy track
to crush with its accelerating roar
our elegiac. Yet still we're back,
sifting as it fades, for whatever ore
is in the words, and you there too, to fill our lack!
