A Royal Gift cover

Miss Agatha and Miss Prudence want to send a special wedding gift to the young prince they have watched grow up, but they don’t have much money. After a long search, the old ladies find something they think will make a perfect present for the royal pair, but they soon learn that their gift is even more special than they had realized.

This Beginning Reader is one of those “it might be true” type of stories that people love to repeat. This one apparently made the rounds when the Duke of York (later King George VI) was married in 1923, and was related, with a disclaimer about its accuracy, in the February 1950 issue of The Reader’s Digest. The chess set in that story was said to have been one belonging to the royal family since the days of Henry VIII.
