It was Mama’s birthday. Maria reminded Rosie in the morning. There was to be a party when Mama came home from work. “But I have nothing to give Mama,” Rosie said.

“Don’t worry, ” Maria said. “Mama won’t expect anything from you but a big hug.”

Rosie didn’t think that was enough. Carlos and Maria and Manuel all had presents for Mama. She, Rosie, ought to have one, too.

During the day, Rosie stayed with Mrs. Lopez. But she was busy sewing new curtains for her kitchen and had no time to help Rosie think of a present. Then when Rosie went outside after lunch, she found a beautiful button at the bottom of the stairs. Though the button belonged to Mr. Muldoon, the mailman, who cam back to claim it, it was the start of Rosie’s trading adventure that led to the perfect present.
