![]() I don't want sympathyI want to be like everyone else! The cry comes from Rosemaries deepest feelings. She doesnt want to wear the yellow Star of David, honored symbol though it is. She hates having to change schools. She yearns for her old friends. But the Brenners have decided that going into hiding is not for them. They want to stay in their own home in Amsterdam and openly face whatever comes. Slowly, inexorably, the walls close in. Daily the Nazis extend their decrees against Jews. The Brenners are forced to go into a concentration camp. To Rosemarie, her life seems to be coming to an end. Yet even as she despairs, she cannot give up hope. Rosemarie Brenner, the girl in the story, is one survivor of the holocaust. She survived through a combination of chance, luck, coincidenceand a strong desire to live. In this sense her story is not typical, for to survive was not typical at all. But as she proceeded on her journey to survival, she experienced many of the things experienced by countless thousands who did not survive. Like all the characters in this story, Rosemarie is an invention of the authora compositebased on very real people who lived through all the things described in this book. All the events in this storythe places, backgrounds, and circumstancesare absolutely true. The camps are real and everything that happened there, down to the names of the SS guards. Reviews: Subdued though realistic in its treatment of the horrors of Nazi concentration camps, this is also a convincing characterization of the maturing of a young girl under those circumstances. Booklist A sensitive and affecting story. Publishers Weekly Believable characterization skillfully developed in a compelling first-person narrative. The Horn Book | ||
