Do It Yourself (DIY)

One of the greatest thrills to *any* art is being able to say you did it yourself.

In this section, you will find several pages explaining, step-by-step, how we (and our apprentice maille smiths) create some of the pieces of jewelry, clothing and armour, as well as how you can make some of the weaves we use. Not all of these tutorials were written by us, there are literally so many of these elsewhere on the net, that to re-write them would simply be redundant. Where it applies, either credit has been given to the author, or a link has been provided to the original tutorial. Please bookmark this page or use your browser's "Back" button to return here.

European 4-in-1 Probably the most commonly used weave of maille used today. Often used for Armour as well as jewelry.

Hauberk Pattern with 45° sleeves
This hauberk is of the controversial "45 degree pattern." This pattern ensures that the maille on the arms hangs in the correct manner, but this results in a heavier shirt. If you prefer the look and feel that a seam gives, go with this shirt. If you want to make one similar to the LOTR shirts, make a 90° sleeved hauberk.

Byzantine a very common jewelry weave. Simple, yet very elegant, it looks just as good in heavy-gauge base-metal rings as it does in delicate precious metal.

Full-Persian One of the basic jewelry weaves. Can be difficult to get started, but once you get going, turns into a beautiful rope of maille.
