BOOKS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE 


  "DO YOU like to go to new places and do new things? Do you like 
to explore?" 

  These are the opening words of The Supreme Council's brand-new 
children's book Let's Meet Great Americans.  Twice the length of 
the Council's earlier children's book, Let's Celebrate America, 
the just-published work should prove equally successful.  It is 
by the same author, Beverly Enwall, and presents lively, upbeat, 
illustrated mini-biographies of great American men and women in 
exploration, agriculture, industry, government, science, and the 
arts. 

  Written at a fifth- and sixth-grade reading level, Let's Meet 
Great Americans tells, for example, the life stories of Drs. 
Sally Ride and Judith Resnick, space explorers; John Deere and 
George Washington Carver, agrarian pioneers; Benjamin Franklin 
and Mary Jane McLeod Bethune, political and educational leaders; 
Thomas Alva Edison and Walter Elias Disney, innovators in the 
fields of electricity and entertainment.  Every child will enjoy 
this book and, at the same time, improve his or her reading 
skills while learning more about the creative energy that makes 
America great. 

  The book's sturdy binding and cover, as well as its convenient 
size (6 by 9 inches), make it perfect for young readers.  The 
earlier book, Let's Celebrate America, is also still available, 
and like Let's Meet Great Americans it makes an enjoyable, 
beneficial gift for your own child or grandchild.  Even greater 
impact comes from giving one or both of these books in lots to 
community schools and educational systems as an economical, 
effective gift from local Lodges and Scottish Rite Bodies.  This 
donation could be, for instance, part of an ongoing Americanism 
and Education Program. 

  Any primary school teacher will be grateful to receive these 
practical and inspirational books, and our Childhood Language 
Disorders Centers will certainly find use for them in therapy 
sessions or as reading materials for their waiting rooms. For 
example,  Let's Celebrate America describes eleven national 
holidays, from Columbus Day to Armed Forces Day, using three 
view-points - why we celebrate, how we celebrate, and what 
families can do together to enjoy each special day. In addition, 
a closing section sketches the origin and significance of eight 
other holidays such as New Year's Day and Father's Day.
