HACKENSACK EDUCATION ASSOCIATION

March 20, 2000

 

The March 20, 2000 HEA Faculty Council meeting was called to order by President Robert Curtis at 3:30 p.m.

The February 28, 2000 minutes were approved. A motion to accept the minutes was made by Vida Story and seconded.

The Treasurer presented the report for February 2000. A motion to accept the report was made by Vida Story and seconded.

The Corresponding Secretary will visit The Spa at The Restaurant and obtain information about possible group rates. The Corresponding Secretary received information from the Social Chair regarding the Honors Dinner. The Social Chair encourages retirees to make their decision by April 21 so that they can be included in this year’s program. The names of retirees that the Social Chair received to date are: Regina Brennan, Eleanor DeRiso, Dorothy Coleman, Gloria Juliana, Brenda Turner, Carol Alamia, Jane Savage, Karen Girardi, William Shaw, James Zaccone, Frank LeRose, Henry Quant, Robert Bonica, and Barry Sachais. The names of 25-year honorees that the Social Chair received to date are: Madeline Carrino, Eleanor DeRiso, Marilyn Habbyshaw, Marion Ritscher, Phyllis Russo, Karen Bonica, Carol Hart, Karen Addicks, Robert Giarrusso, and John Streemke. If any other members should be honored, please contact Maria Matera at Fairmount School. The Honors Dinner will be held at Season’s in Washington Township on June 1 at 5:30 p.m.

The BCEA representative reported receiving campaign literature from Cherylin Roesser and Dennis Testa, who are both running for BCEA President. Ms. Roesser opposes payment for the position of BCEA president. President Curtis stated he received requests for endorsements from other BCEA candidates, but we do not encourage this.

The Vice President reported receiving TALC reports from the Middle School and the High School.

The President reported that some members received letters from Dr. Montesano regarding personnel changes in the buildings. We do not have a right to a position because of seniority. If one of us returns from a leave, the Board is not obligated to give us our same job but a comparable position. President Curtis said he does not know when

a new seniority list will be published. The problem with the music teacher has been resolved.

The Membership Committee reported that some members reported that there are inconsistencies with the payroll deductions for dues. Different amounts of money are deducted during different months for different personnel. This matter will be investigated.

The Election Committee presented the HEA slate for Executive Officers and Building Reps. Nominations were made for building reps at Fairmount - Maria Matera, Joy Dorsey , and Kathy Waldburg; Jackson Avenue - Peggy Patterson; Parker - Gloria Martin; Middle School - Andrea Oates and Karen Olobardi; High School - Fran Borg. A Teacher Assistant nomination for Jackson Avenue was made for Fabiola Madrid. The nominees will inform the Election Chair if they decline the nomination. An election is not needed in a school where the slate is filled, and there are no contested positions. Voting will be held from April 6 to April 13, with counting of ballots on April 13 at 3:15 p.m. in the high school.

The Social Committee report was included in the Corresponding Secretary’s report.

The Negotiations Committee had nothing to report. No exact meeting date has been determined, but we expect another meeting before mid-April.

The Legislative Committee had nothing to report.

The Professional Rights and Responsibilities Committee had no new issues to report.

The Teacher Education Committee reported that two spaces are open in the "Using Cooperative Learning Techniques with your Science and Math Lessons" course. The other two courses are closed. There is a county workshop on April 11 for members of the 100-hours committee. The committee members are: Georgie Brown, Amy Curry, Ingrid Davis, June Porto, Peter Capone, and Bernard Kaminsky.

Hillers and the High School held TALC meetings and sent in their reports.

Old Business. There was no old business.

New Business. The NEA convention will be held in Chicago from June 30 - July 6. Fran Muller nominated Vida Story to be one of our three delegates. The vote to have Vida Story represent the HEA was unanimous. Teacher assistants can attend the convention. If any teacher or teacher assistant would like to be a delegate to the NEA convention in Chicago, please contact President Curtis.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:14 p.m., on motion of Vida Story.
