EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
The monthly meeting of HEA
Faculty Council was held at the Hackensack Middle School on Monday, December
18, 2000. The meeting was called to order by President Robert Kern Curtis at 3:33
p.m.
The minutes of the November
20, 2000 meeting were approved with corrections. A motion to accept the minutes was made by Vida Story. The motion passed.
Officers’ Reports:
Treasurer’s Report. The budget report was distributed. A motion to accept the report was made by Georgiana Brown. The
motion passed.
Corresponding Secretary’s Report. The corresponding secretary reported that HEA received a greeting
card from the officers of the Bergen County Education Association.
BCEA Report. Alma Cook-Dash reported that NJEA is sponsoring a Professional
Development Conference in Mahwah on February 3, 2001. This conference may be used toward the 100 hours of education.
Vice President’s Report. No report.
President’s Report. President Curtis reported that at the last negotiations’ session,
the mediator encouraged HEA and the Board to work informally toward a
resolution of the contract. The next
meeting with Mr. Capone and the HEA Negotiations' Committee Chair will be held
on
December 20, 2000.
President Curtis appointed Lynn Berhalter and Maria Catena to the
Calendar Committee.
School Reports:
Fairmount. The roof and part of the structure of the school is still being
repaired. The gymnasium is being used
as the cafeteria.
There continues to be a need
for more telephones in the building.
There is a problem with the
lack of substitutes.
Hillers.
Construction is in progress at Hillers.
There is a problem with flooding.
There continues to be a
problem with substitutes for special area teachers.
The problem with parking
tickets has not been resolved.
Jackson Avenue School. There were no building representatives present.
Parker School.
Parker School has been closed on two Mondays because of water main
breaks.
There is a problem with
parking and the lack of substitutes.
Middle School.
TALC meeting is scheduled for this week. The staff is still adjusting to the block scheduling. The issue
with the overcrowded lunch periods has not been adequately resolved. Additional
staff members have been placed in the cafeteria to alleviate the problem. It was suggested that an administrator be
present at all lunch periods. There is a problem with announcements being made
during class periods. The parking issue was discussed. The sign by the Main
Office on the outside of the building is grammatically incorrect. The need for
substitutes is a concern.
High School. The new time schedule is a lot more work for teachers. Many of the problems with the schedule are
still being worked out. Lack of substitutes is a problem.
Membership Committee. The Chairperson will distribute computer disks to all new
teachers. The disks deal with resources
available to new teachers.
Election Committee. The Middle School is in need of an additional building
representative. The selection of the
building representative will take place at the next Faculty Council Meeting
(January 2001).
Social Committee. No report.
Legislative Committee. The Chair reported that the Bergen County
Legislative Meeting will be held at the beginning of the year, January
2001. The Political Action Conference
is scheduled for February 24, 2001 in New Brunswick.
NJEA is opposing the Abstinence Bill that mandates the teaching of
sexual abstinence in the classroom. The
rationale is that legislative mandates interfere with local control of schools.
Professional Rights and Responsibilities. No report.
Teacher Education Committee. No report.
The Chair was absent due to illness.
TALC. No report.
