HACKENSACK EDUCATION ASSOCIATION MINUTES

November 15, 1999

The November 15, 1999 HEA meeting was called to order by President Robert Curtis at 3:31 p.m.

The October 25, 1999 minutes were corrected. A motion to accept the corrections was made by Fran Borg and seconded. A motion to accept the corrected minutes was made by Fran Muller and seconded.

The Treasurer was not present; his report was presented. A motion to accept the report was made by Fran Borg and seconded.

The Corresponding Secretary had no report.

The BCEA representative combined his report with the Legislative Committee Report. On the state level, members were requested to send a pink postcard to the governor regarding the subcontracting of support services. These two bills will be voted on by the legislature soon. President Curtis noted that a law permitting subcontracting was passed about fifteen years ago. The UniServ office in Emerson shares its office with the Blood Bank. Some members at the Blood Bank want to unionize and requested support from BCEA. BCEA voted to not take a stand on this issue. There will be a meeting on November 20 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss this matter further.

The Vice President had no report.

The President has been on the phone with Evan Goldman and Dr. Montesano regarding the Middle School’s scheduling problems. A formal grievance has been filed by a teacher at the High School. The President sent a letter to the editor of the Record regarding teachers’ taking off on state holidays as a job action. This letter should be printed on November 16 or 17.

The Membership Committee received the name of a newly elected teacher. An application will be sent to her.

The Social Committee was complimented by President Curtis for the Teachers’ Convention arrangements. One member stated that reservations are available from the Atlantic City Hospitality Association at a lower price. This reservation application appears in the August issue of NJEA Review.

The Negotiations Committee reported that there was no response from Dr. Montesano to the October 8 letter requesting negotiations that was sent to him.

The Election Committee had no report.

Public Relations needs a chairman and committee.

President Curtis requested a grievance chairman.

The Teacher Education Committee reported that courses are ending this week. A clarification was needed if two teachers present a course. If ten people are in a course, the stipend should be split between the teachers.

Fairmount Avenue School held a TALC meeting; a report will be sent to the Vice President.

Old Business. The problem about the lack of substitutes still exists. Some students will be removed at the end of the marking period in the high school bilingual classes that do not have an aide to reduce the class size to reasonable number, so the situation will be educationally sound. Betty Manning reported that one teacher she represents feels that administrators should not be invited to the Opening Day Luncheon as our guests.

New Business. There was no new business.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Valerie Gancarz

Recording Secretary
