Faculty Council Meeting

October 22, 2007

The October 22, 2007 HEA Faculty Council meeting in the High School Media Center was called to order at 3:40 p.m. by President Fran Borg.

A motion to accept the minutes from the September 17, 2007 Faculty Council Meeting was made by Vida Story and approved.

OFFICER’S REPORTS

President.  Fran Borg stressed the importance of members reading the minutes because of important information that is contained in them.

The deadline for health insurance open enrollment is October 31, or November 30 for new teachers.  Forms may be obtained at the Board Office.  A Prudential representative will be setting up appointments at various schools to discuss disability insurance.  Members may also call Prudential, AFLAC, and NY Life for further information.

Evelyn Moyano will replace Tanisha Williams as the building representative for Parker School.

Expect DYFS information next week about responsibilities regarding reporting evidence of abuse, parental neglect, lack of supervision, and bullying. BCEA offers educational support workshops (many for professional development credit) on these topics.  Send the form to Fran and the workshop is free of cost.

Winter (and Summer) Leadership Conferences on topics such as Collective Bargaining and Creating a Successful Team are being offered.  The Conferences were highly recommended by Betty Meeks Manning, who attended last summer.

Fran proposed a paid position be created for the writing of an HEA newsletter.  Vida Story made a motion to add the paid position to the HEA for the purpose of writing a newsletter three times (minimum) per year, pending looking into legal ramifications.  The motion passed. Ron Durso volunteered to write the newsletter.

Norm Danzig will give a presentation on November 5 regarding the responsibilities of building representatives.  Vida Story made a

motion to change the date of the next Faculty Council meeting from November 19 to November 5, when Norm Danzig will speak.  The motion passed.

Fran reminded members to check the NJEA Web site for information about online professional development activities.

After returning from a leave of absence, a member must re-enroll as the member is taken off the Board of Education employment rolls once a pay period is missed.

Treasurer.  Lorelei Kaminsky reported on the first Trial Balance (as of September 30, 2007) of the new fiscal year.  Vida Story made a motion to accept the report as presented.  The motion passed.
