HACKENSACK EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
FACULTY COUNCIL MEETING
MONDAY, JUNE 11, 2001

The monthly meeting of the HEA Faculty Council was held on Monday, June 11, 2001 at the Hackensack Middle School. The meeting was called to order by President Robert Kern Curtis at 3:30 p.m.

A motion to accept the minutes of the May 21, 2001 meeting was made by Vida Story. The motion passed.

Officers' Report

Treasurer's Report.
The treasurer, Mark Porto, presented the budget report. A motion to accept the report was made by Vida Story. The motion passed.

Corresponding Secretary's Report. No report.

Recording Secretary's Report. No report.

Vice President's Report. No report.

BCEA Report. Alma Cook-Dash did not run for re-election as faculty representative. President Curtis will appoint a BCEA representative in September.

President's Report. President Curtis reported that Evan Goldman is hospitalized. George Lambert will be performing the duties of Mr. Goldman until further notice.
The President clarified the matter of the money from the superintendent's office to upgrade the teachers' rooms in the various schools. Submit a list of items needed for this project to President Curtis.
The remainder of the President's report is included in the various committee reports.


School Reports.

Fairmount.
The faculty met the new principal.
There was a discussion concerning the procedures to be followed for sexual harassment complaints.
There are concerns about compensation for teachers who miss planning periods. President Curtis reported that the new contract states that all teachers are entitled to compensation when missing planning periods for any reason.

Hillers. There are concerns about compensation for teachers who miss planning periods.
Packing, storage of room contents, and moving continues to be of concern.
There was a discussion concerning the cutting of funds from the art budget.

Jackson Avenue. No report.

Parker. Brenda Walker was nominated and elected building representative.
New rugs are expected for the building.

Middle School. There is a great concern about the new school. There are concerns about the focus being completely on the new school with little apparent concern about the teachers in grades seven and eight in the Middle School.
There are concerns about the loss of classrooms, transposing of the science labs, and moving and storage.
The teachers are unhappy and confused. The morale is low.
High School. There was a Bagel Breakfast- Letter Writing Campaign in support of the Pension Enhancement Bill. Over one hundred forty letters were written to legislators. Many responses to the letters have been received.
The Crisis Management Program worked well in response to the recent death of a student.
There was a discussion concerning the lack of response to teachers after submitting the 'Denial of Credit' forms.
There was a discussion concerning the 100 Hours and the End of Year Review.


Committee Reports. Membership Committee. The membership Chairperson, Susan Young, was absent. President Curtis reported that, as of this date, one teacher and one teacher assistant have not joined HEA.

Elections Committee. No report.

Social Committee. The President reported that all arrangements have been made for the Honors' Dinner.

Negotiations Committee. No report.

Legislative Committee. The Chair, Vida Story, thanked all members for the letter writing campaign. The Pension Enhancement Bill is no longer in the Committee. The Bill will be voted by the end of the month.

Professional Rights and Responsibilities. No report.

Teacher Education Committee. The President presented the report. The building representatives thanked June Porto for her contributions to the Teacher Education Committee.
The President reported that no one volunteered to attend the NJEA Summer Leadership Conference.
President Curtis advised members who have inquired about auditing courses, in relation to the 100 Hours, to get detailed information from Mr. Capone.

Old Business. No old business.

New Business. There was a discussion concerning computer workshops. President Curtis mentioned that he has some funds available for teachers to attend computer workshops. The Professional Development Committee is anticipating the availability of a larger course offering for In-Service courses in the future.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:17 p.m.
