COUNCIL MEETING
MONDAY, APRIL
16, 2001
The monthly meeting of the HEA Faculty Council was held on Monday, April 16, 2001 at the Hackensack Middle School. The meeting was called to order by President Robert Curtis at 3:30 p.m.

BCEA Report. Alma Cook-Dash presented the report. The Legislative Dinner will be held May 8, 2001 at the
Venetian. Those members interested in
attending must see President Curtis as soon as possible. The Pension Clinic is
June 5, 2001. See Alma Cook-Dash for
details.

Vice
President’s Report. No report
President’s Report. The President presented his
report in conjunction with the various committee reports.
School Reports.
Fairmount. There is a concern about the school safety issue. Outside doors need to be locked to prevent
intruders from entering. Classroom
doors need to have locks. There is no
place for teachers to lock up personal items, i.e. purses and handbags.
Hillers. No progress has been made in obtaining a telephone for use in the
teachers' room.
There
was a meeting of T.A.L.C. committee.
The T.A.L.C. report was submitted to the principal.
President
Curtis reminded members that the TALC report must be published with the
principal's verbal comments not submitted to the principal for his written
answers.
Jackson
Avenue. There is a concern about school security. The
building should not be so accessible to the public.
There
is a telephone in the teachers' room and a nameplate on the door.

Parker. There is a concern about the role of staff developers in the
classroom. Are staff developers allowed to write teacher evaluations? President Curtis will speak to Dr. Montesano
concerning this matter.
Middle
School. There is a concern about the ramifications
of the Middle School when the new school is finished. The completion of the new
building is on schedule.
High
School. No report.
Committee Reports
Membership Committee. The Chair reported that two teachers have not joined the
Association.
Elections Committee. President Curtis presented the report. The elected
officers and building representatives were presented to the Faculty Council.

Committee Reports

Social Committee. President Curtis presented the report. The Honors' Dinner is June 14, 2001.
Letters
will be sent to the Honorees next week.
Negotiations Committee. No report.
Legislative Committee. The Chair presented the report. The Chair asked members to vote in the
April
17, 2001 school budget election and to make calls to a list of educators who
live in the community encouraging them to vote.
Members
interested in changing voter affiliation should do so as soon as possible.
The
change in the Pension initiative to "over 55" was discussed.
Support
the School Budget. Vida Story made a motion for
the members of HEA to support the school budget. The motion passed.
Professional Rights and
Responsibilities Committee. President Curtis presented
the report. There was a concern in regards to grievances
at two schools.
A
volunteer is need for the position of Grievance Chairperson.
Teacher Education Committee. A volunteer is needed for the position of Chairperson of the
Teacher Education Committee.
T.A.L.C. The High School T.A.L.C. committee presented a report. The Chair reported that there is a problem
with building and safety. There are 40 doors unlocked at all times. These doors are accessible to outside
intruders.
In
the matter of scheduling, the principal will submit a survey to all teachers to
solicit their opinion about returning to a zero period next year and to find
out if there is an interest in teaching a zero period class.
A
soda machine has been placed in the teachers' room on the third floor.
Old Business. There was a discussion concerning staffing of the
new school. More staff will be needed than previously stated. There are more
than 500 students above the previous prediction.
The
position of assistant principal for the new school has been posted.
New Business. The Treasurer presented the budget for the 2001-2002 school
year.
The
cost of tickets for the Honors' Dinner will increase by $5.00.
A
motion to accept the budget was made by Vida Story. The motion passed.
Without
further discussion, the meeting was adjourned at 4:20 p.m.
