Council Meeting
February
24, 2003
The February 24, 2003 HEA Faculty Council Meeting was called
to order in the Middle School Faculty Dining Room at 3:35 p.m. by President
Robert Curtis.
A motion to accept the January 27, 2003 minutes was made by Vida Story and approved.
OFFICER’S REPORTS
Treasurer.
The Treasurer’s Report was presented.
A motion to accept the report was made by Vida Story and approved.
Corresponding Secretary. The Corresponding Secretary had no report.
Recording Secretary.
The Recording Secretary had no report.
BCEA Representative.
The BCEA representative reported that the $2 million fund targeted for
education is not factual; the funds have been used for other educational
needs. The subcontracting bill is
resolved. Attendance at the legislative
dinner on April 9 is encouraged.
Members are encouraged to write letters to protect benefit Bills A2574
and S1972, which protect state health benefits; this can also be done on the
BCEA web site.
Vice President. The Vice President had a TALC meeting with Dr. Montesano. Items discussed included parking, cleanliness of buildings, and teacher morale. Funds are available for painting rooms. The Student Action Coalition

will undertake this project; anyone requesting the services
of this coalition is asked to contact the SAC advisor, Nikki Van Ess.
President. Due to the work schedule of the NJEA field reps, a workshop will be held during the 2003-04 school year, rather than this year. Ronald Durso was appointed to the Professional Development Committee. A motion was made by Vida Story that the content of the school reports not be reported in the minutes. The motion was seconded and discussed and passed.
SCHOOL REPORTS
Reports were made by each school in the district.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Membership.
The Membership Chair stated that if anyone has a name change or address
change, they should send this information to NJEA; this can be done through the
web site—hea.org.
Election.
Members were asked to consider nominations for the March meeting and to
consider attending the NEA convention in July.
Social. The
Social Chair reported that 15 retirees and 4
25-year teachers will be honored at the May 15 Honors Dinner. Notices will be distributed at the end of
March.
Negotiations.
A meeting was requested with board members for March 11.
Legislative.
The Legislative Chair reported that people should be encouraged to
register to vote. Members are urged to
write letters supporting Bills A2574 and S1972.
Professional Rights and Responsibilities. Three elementary school principals were
contacted about the reading surveys.

Teacher Education.
Insufficient copies of course offerings were sent to the schools.
T.A.L.C. The
spring TALC meetings should be scheduled.
COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ACTION. There were no recommendations.
OLD BUSINESS. Fliers regarding professional conferences were distributed. They concern Bullying, Resilience Training, and Good Ideas.
NEW BUSINESS. Sick days are used immediately before and after giving birth; unpaid maternity leave can be for up to two years. It was advised to check with Personnel for updated information.
Corrected W2 forms will be sent to those with discrepancies with Washington National.
There is concern about teachers being required to perform self-evaluations.
ANNOUNCEMENTS. There were no announcements.
ADJOURNMENT. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:36 p.m. on motion by Vida Story.
