Faculty Council Meeting

January 14, 2008

 

 

The January 14, 2008 HEA Faculty Council meeting in the High School Library was called to order at 3:40 p.m. by President Fran Borg.

 

Vida Story made a motion to accept the minutes of the previous Faculty Council meeting.  The motion was carried.

 

OFFICER’S REPORTS

Treasurer.  Lorelei Kaminsky distributed copies of the current HEA Trial Balance.  Vida Story made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report.  The motion was carried.

 

Corresponding Secretary.  There was no report.

 

Recording Secretary.  There was no report.

 

BCEA Representative.  Betty Meeks Manning reported that the NJEA is striving for a delegation that “looks like New Jersey" for the Representative Assembly and requested council members to approach minorities in each building and to post information on bulletin boards to encourage participation in the Assembly.  Betty also spoke about the SPARKS program that offers free leadership seminars during the summer for teachers who are under the age of 30 and have been teaching for at least four years.  These seminars deal with management and leadership skills.  The 2008 NEA Representative Assembly is also seeking nominations of teachers chosen for outstanding work in the areas of human and civil rights relating to the school and the community.  Contact Betty if you have someone you'd like to nominate.

 

Vice President.  Amy Fink announced that a T.A.L.C. meeting would be held at the high school during exam week.

 

President.  Fran Borg noted there is nothing new to discuss at this time regarding negotiations about the school calendar.  Please contact Fran if interested in attending the Winter Leadership Conference to be held on Feb. 1-2, as there is currently a vacancy.  The process of forming an Environmental Committee has begun with Melanie Alston and Amy Curry as committee members.

 

School Reports. Individual school reports were discussed.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

Membership.  Denise Corso sent out another email notification to those from whom dues were not received. 

 

Election.  Nominating forms for new officers and council members will be distributed in March.  Please urge members to be willing to serve in those capacities.

 

Social.  There was none.

 

Legislative.  Vida Story attended a meeting in which the Senators and Congressmen thanked the Education Association for their support.  It was noted that health benefits would change on April 1.  Upcoming events include the February 23 Legislative and Political Action Conference Dinner and the April 2 BCEA Legislative Dinner.

 

Professional Rights and Responsibilities.  There was no report.

 

Teacher Education.  There was none.

 

T.A.L.C.  There was no report.

 

COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ACTION.  There was no report.

 

OLD BUSINESS.  Betty Meeks Manning suggested implementation of a "Great Hackensack Public Schools Day".  Further discussion will follow.

 

NEW BUSINESS.  There was no new business.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS.  There were no announcements.

 

ADJOURNMENT.  With no further business, Vida Story made a motion at 5:00 p.m. to adjourn the meeting.  The motion was carried.
