Faculty Council Meeting

 

January 12, 2004

 

 

The January 12, 2004, HEA Faculty Council Meeting was called to order in the High School Library at 3:30 p.m., by President Robert Curtis.

 

A motion to accept the December 15, 2003, corrected minutes was made by Vida Story and approved.  The correction is:  The three Report Card Committee members from each school do not represent every grade level from each school needed for each of the three elementary report cards.

 

OFFICER’S REPORTS

 

Treasurer.  The Treasurer was not present.  The books were brought to the auditor on January 9, 2004; therefore, there was no report.

 

Corresponding Secretary.  The Corresponding Secretary reported the resignation of Suzette Febre as High School Faculty Council representative.

 

Recording Secretary.  The Recording Secretary had no report.

 

BCEA Representative.  The BCEA representative was not preset, but a copy of the letter from BCEA regarding Hackensack Medical Center and Blue Cross was distributed.

 

Vice President.  As the Vice President was not present, there was no report.

 

President.  President Curtis stated that he has applied for a new position as Department Chair of the Math/Science Departments at the High School and Middle School.  If the Board elects him to this position, he will have to resign as HEA President. 

 

SCHOOL REPORTS

 

Reports were made by each school in the district.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

Membership.  The Membership Chair reported that two new High School Math teachers received membership forms.

 

Election.  Eileen Hooper nominated Susan Young to fill the vacancy on the High School Faculty Council.  The motion was approved.

 

Social.  Maria Matera is working on the May 13 Honors Dinner.

 

Negotiations.  A Negotiations team meeting will be held on January 13, 2004 with Norman Danzig to determine what action should be taken.  These ideas will be presented at the January 26 HEA General meeting to be held at the Middle School auditorium at 3:30 p.m.  Teachers are urged to attend the January 27, 2004 Board meeting at 7:30 p.m. No date has been set for the meeting with a state mediator.  Members were reminded that Board negotiations were delayed because of the Board re-election in June.  The HEA Negotiations team offered to meet with the Board during the summer but no date was mutually agreeable.  The first meeting was held in October.

 

Legislative.  The Legislative Chair reported that January 12 is the last day the lame duck House and Senate could approve the health benefits bill.  If it is passed, the Governor will be encouraged to sign it; if it is not passed, the new legislature will be contacted about its passage.  Districts were reminded to begin working on budgets now.

 

Professional Rights and Responsibilities.  There was no discussion.

 

Teacher Education.  The Teacher Education Chair stated there was a conflict of dates for the four courses offered for the spring, and this problem will be addressed in the future.  Three additional courses are being planned.

 

T.A.L.C.  President Curtis encouraged all schools to hold one meeting before the end of this semester with their principal.

 

COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ACTION.  There were no recommendations.

 

OLD BUSINESS.  There was no old business.

 

NEW BUSINESS.  Street parking continues to be a problem.  Parking on snow-covered roads continues to be a problem.  Lack of teacher substitutes and teacher assistant substitutes continues to be a problem.  It was suggested offering a teacher substitute a teacher assistant substitute position.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS.  There were no announcements.

 

ADJOURNMENT.  With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:15 p.m., on motion by Eileen Hooper.
