The church of Latter-day Saints seems to have by far the best and easiest site to search on the net. Their Personal Ancestry File program has everything you will need to get started keeping your family tree and plenty of features even you already have been researching your family tree for years. There PAF Companion can help you graphically display and map your tree and both of these programs are at my favorite price. (FREE in case this is your first time to my site!) Another thing I REALLY like about this service is there use of "Ancestral File Numbers". These make it extremely useful to link in records or large groups of records from their tree. Once imported finding and merging duplicates is a matter of a few mouse clicks.

First step is to get yourself a good recordkeeping program. I personally recomend the Personal Ancestry File from the Church of Latter-day Saints (up above). This program is fairly easy to work with, allows you search their website from within the program. This powerful program can also create an HTML version of your tree to put on your own website. They also have a powerful companion program to create all sorts of charts and graphs.

Once you have this install on your computer enter all the information on yourself and any relatives you can recall. Enter the birth & other event dates as well as social security numbers where applicable. Speak with your relatives, I'm sure some of them can recall relatives and dates that you may not recall off the top of your head.

A good third step is to fill in any missing information you may have. Social security numbers and birthdates can be easily located off of searchenginez.com (link down below this box).

This will establish a good starting point for you. Click on some of your relatives on your Personal Ancestry File program and see if the LDS already had information on these relatives. The LDS has identification numbers that work much like social security numbers. That way if there are two folks from the same area and same time period you will better be able to choose which one is your relative and how they fit into your tree. Remember, genealogy is like progamming. Good programmers may know how to code, but GREAT programmers know how to copy! ;-)

Next, check out some other sites like Geneanet and Cyndi's list. Someone may have already done a lot of your work for you! Also, once you get back in your tree far enough you will almost be assured that someone else has started a tree for you. A lot of the records in the 1700's start getting spotty however.

Possible chronology errors explained:

I'm sure everyone who has been lucky enough to trace their family tree's back to the early 1600's may have noticed some dates being a little off. Pope Gregory XIII declared that October 15 would come after October 4th in the year 1582 as well as centennial years would skip leap years unless they where a multiple of 400. This would correct the dates being off due to leap years being not 100% accurate on the Julian calendar which was started in 46 BC by Julius Caesar. The problem arose because early calculations had approximated the time it took the Earth to orbit around the Sun at 365.25 days which is close but not exact. It is 365.242199 which is a lot closer to the 365.2425 days set forth in the Gregorian calendar over the Julian system. The time difference that Pope Gregory declared was to correct the number of extra leap years that had built up over the centurys. This is but one possible explanation as there where also plenty of other calendar systems in use over the years. Some other calendars used are the Jewish calendar (Based much more on lunar cycles than others), a Quaker system (which did not use months or named days), a French calendar that was used for a mere seven years and the Julian calendar itself which was changed several times. Making this matter even more fun to Genealogists is that not every country adopted the new calendar at the same time (Britain Via the "Chestfield Act" 1752, Greece 1923, Holland 1583, USSR 1918) and I can't recall ever seeing a date with a suffix to define which calendar system it is using other than AD (Anno Domini means in the year of Our Lord) or BC (Before Christ). :-) Another great change in the Julian to Gregorian calendar was the the start of the year. In the Julian system this was March 25th NOT the July 1st we are all accustomed to. Some places tried to rectify this by using a double dating system. Thus a date might be January 1751/52 where 1751 would be the Julian year and 1752 would be the Gregorian year. Double dating was inconsistently done and only made matters worse in the long run. Not just actual dates can be different in different calendars. Years can be different as well. Dionysius Exiguus was asked by Pope John I to determine the correct date for Easter. Dionysius believed that Christ was born one year before the founding of Rome but it is now believed that Christ was already a few years older than that when Rome was founded.
Well! I guess your best bet when dealing with dates from old documents would be to check to see when the document or book was made and what kind of calendar system they where (hopefully!) using at that time and then convert it as necessary. :-)
