Artificial Intelligence and artificial life:

Artificial life on your PC is not exactly a new phenomenon. This started years ago perhaps when Conway's life was first put on PC. This was a simple set of rules in that there are a number of squares usually called cells on a two dimensional grid. Each generation or turn the computer goes and looks at each cell. If this cell has one or no neighbors it dies of loneliness. If this cell has 3 or more neighbors it will reproduce and produce another living cell. This has grown in recent years with the addition of virtual pets and such for your PC. Couple with artificial intelligence these virtual pets or beings can be quite entertaining and educational. Golem @ home was a nice project that emulated the evolutionary life cycle of creatures. Each creature was a near random creation that tried to walk. The further each creature walked was its indication for fitness and Golem would keep the two hundred fittest creatures and upload these to a server at set intervals. Other projects involve evolving creatures in a aquarium setting and make excellent screen savers.
