last_unicornThis mystical, magnificently-animated feature captivates children of all ages as it brings one of their favorite creatures to life-the unicorn.
It's a dark time for these legendary animals. Humankind has stopped believing in their power, and a fearsome, fiery red bull has driven all of them ...except one ...to the end of the earth. And when she discovers that she can save her brothers and sisters if she challenges the bull with her magic, she embarks on a perilous journey through an unknown land.
Her quest leads her to the castle of the evil Lord Haggard, where she must summon all her courage to confront the bull and return the unicorns to their forests again.
The Last Unicorn features an unforgettable cast of characters, brought to life by the vocal talents of Jeff Bridges, Angela Lansbury, Mia Farrow, Christopher Lee and more.
Best of all, The Last Unicorn delivers a tender message of love and the power of magic, myths and dreams.

The only edit that I'm aware of in the DVD version compared with the VHS version occurs when Molly meets the unicorn for the first time and expresses anger at the fact that the unicorn didn't come when Molly was "new". Molly's dialogue was edited slightly in the DVD version to remove the words "Damn you!" There are different spellings for some of the character names. I've chosen to use the subtitles accompanying the DVD version as a guide.
The animation studio, Topcraft, animated The Last Unicorn and a number of other Rankin-Bass productions. Later the animation staff were hired by Animage and Hayao Miyazaki to work on Nausicaa. After Nausicaa was completed, some of the Topcraft animators formed what would become Studio Ghibli.

There are a handful of titles in my vast collection that I like to keep on hand for immediate viewing and the Last Unicorn is one of those titles. My favorite character is, by far, King Haggard. Haggard's first meeting with Amalthia and Haggard's later confrontation with Amalthia where he cautions her against denying herself are my favorite scenes.
I picked up a VHS version sometime in the late '80s. I tried for a number of years to track down the soundtrack using local sources, to no avail. I picked up a handful of America's CDs hoping that one might contain some of the songs that I heard, but, no dice.
In the late 90's, I stumbled into the information super highway and discovered that there was a German CD available on, of all places, Amazon.com. The first thing I ever bought on-line was the soundtrack for the Last Unicorn.
I used to have the 1988 VHS version of Last Unicorn. I have since repurchased this title on DVD. Even though the DVD contains a slight edit, I decided not to keep the VHS version and not to take the time to transfer my VHS version to DVD.
